My family was comfortably middle class, back in the halcyon days when a household income of ~$100,000 could still provide stability and opportunity for a family of four.I've always loved reading books about history and politics (check out my <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/16246433-michael-farrell" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Goodreads</a> if so inclined), and I grew up knowing I wanted to be a public servant one day. I came of age during the Clinton and Bush presidencies, and saw how decisions in Washington could profoundly impact the lives of working class Americans. And most of the time what I saw was folks in Washington cutting the social safety net, prioritizing tax breaks for the wealthy, and spending billions of dollars on foreign wars while American families struggled to get by.Those lessons stuck with me. I believed government could and should work for working people. I dreamed of one day being a progressive voice in Congress, challenging special interests and working hard against career politicians who had lost touch with the people they were elected to serve.

We’re collecting signatures to get&nbsp;Michael on the ballot—and we’re doing it face-to-face, in the community, with people who are ready for a change.

<h2>It's Time for Change</h2>And now, some twenty odd years later, looking at a different cast of villains (neo-liberals and neo-cons have morphed into feckless moderates and MAGAs), we see the same tired playbook of do-nothing-establishments and reverse Robin Hood economics, stealing from the middle class to fund foreign wars and tax cuts for the rich.&nbsp;Middle-class families are still being squeezed, while powerful corporations and special interests continue to benefit from an economy rigged in their favor. Too often, we're told to accept less while those at the top keep taking more and more.

We can, in fact, have nice things. Our government should represent and advance working people’s material interests instead of catering to the wealthy and special interests. We're the richest country in the world. We can invest more in our people. That is what my campaign is about.

Economy & the Cost of Living

Healthcare should be affordable, universal, and simple. As your Representative, I will co-sponsor the&nbsp;Medicare for All Act, which will guarantee comprehensive, free-at-the-point-of-service coverage for all U.S. residents, eliminating most private insurance, deductibles, and copays. This will lower costs for families and employers, free workers from job-locked healthcare, and help small businesses thrive.

The rent (and mortgage) is too damn high. As your Representative, I will sponsor legislation to create a renter’s tax credit and to increase federal funding for new housing construction, which will bring rents down and help more people buy a home.

Becoming a parent and raising children should not come with impossible financial and professional tradeoffs. As your Representative, I will sponsor legislation guaranteeing universal high-quality, free child care and&nbsp;12 weeks of paid parental leave for all new parents.

No one working full time should struggle to get by. As your Representative, I will sponsor legislation raising the federal minimum wage to at least $20 an hour and tied to inflation and eliminating the sub-minimum wage for tipped workers.

She was just finishing up her first year of law school and, on our second date, accidentally let slip that she wanted to move back to Utah upon graduation in 2022. Although I just met her, I knew that our future was together and that Utah would be home. In 2022, we moved to Sugar House, bought our first home, and married in 2023. Today, we both work as attorneys in Salt Lake City, and we’re proud to be building our lives here.
